Introduction to the Vauxhall Astra and Belmont
The second generation Opel Kadett is available with four petrol engines: 1.2 litre OHV and 1.3, 1.6 and 1.8 litre OHC. The 1.8 litre versions are fitted with fuel injection. A 1.6 diesel engine is also available, but is not dealt with in this manual. Both OHV and OHC engines are well proven designs and, provided regular maintenance is carried out, are unlikely to give trouble.
The Estate is only fitted with the 1.3 or 1.6 engine. A Van is available, and with the exception of the version which has leaf spring rear suspension, closely resembles the passenger car range.
Transmission and running gear follow established Opel front-wheel-drive practice. Manual transmission is either four or five-speed; automatic transmission is available on most models.
These are attractive, comfortable, well-equipped vehicles, requiring minimal maintenance, with most service and repair tasks being straightforward.
Haynes manuals are written specifically for the do-it-yourselfer, yet are complete enough to be used by professional mechanics. Since 1960 Haynes has produced manuals written from hands-on experience based on a vehicle teardown with hundreds of photos and illustrations, making Haynes the world leader in automotive repair information.
